Steel is a raw resource, crucial throughout the game for different purposes, such as construction of various structures, and production of weapons and armor. Steel can be mined out of compacted steel on the map, purchased from bulk goods traders, extracted from Steel slag chunks using an electric smelter, or salvaged by disassembling mechanoids. Not once have I come across a vein of Plasteel. Disassembling mechs and trading are the only ways I have obtained Plasteel up until now. I have tried deep mining to no avail. I constructed 10 drills, only to find 6 steel veins, 3 silver veins and 1 vein of jade. It is becoming really tedious trying to find Plasteel. Are Plasteel veins extremely.
Plasteel is a rare material that exists in a form of mountain veins, and it is quite difficult to be found on a map - you may get one such vein on a large map, though.
But often, when you find such a vein it should have a large deposit of the material; the same with deep drilling. Once you discover a large deposit, it can cover almost all your needs (turrets, space ship).
8 Ways to get Plasteel in Rimworld
1. Smelt the Starting Knife
The first choice of getting some plasteel is to smelt the starting knife - you won’t get much out of it, but it is something anyway.
2. Buld a Long Range Scanner
Building this thing allows your scientists to search for some plasteel chunk. The chunk will probably be guarded, but since it is very light, you will be able to bring the whole thing to your base.
So once you discover it, send a mining party - a single deposit can have around 1000-2000 of plasteel.
Long range scanner is one of the most efficient ways to get plasteel. It usually takes around 8-9 days to find a plasteel meteorite that will give you around 300-500 of the material.
To set up a mining camp will take another 3 days, so it all takes around 11 days, and in the end you will be getting 27-45 plasteel per day.
3. Deep Drilling
You can try finding a plasteel vein with deep drilling, but the downside is that deep drills can spawn mini-infestations. Of course, the drilling in the open shouldn’t give you much headache, but if done inside the base, it may not be very pleasant. If you happen to discover a deposit near your turrets, that may relieve your from some pain.
The benefit of deep drilling is that it is a consistent way of getting plasteel: you will be getting about 7 plasteel per “cycle” (depending on mining skill), and there are around 4 cycles per day. So with this method you will have about 14 units of this material per day. And deep drilling is easier to manage than the long range scanner.
4. Mechanoid Raid
If you have a disassemble table, you can wait for a mechanoid raid or provoke it, and then disassemble them to get some plasteel. While provoking mechanoids in ancient dangers is probably not the most efficient way to achieve your goal, it this quite funny nonetheless.
5. Caravan
Yet another way is to make a caravan to a friendly colony for trading (but not a tribal one). Actually, this can be quite effective - not only for plasteel, but for uranium and gold as well.
To give you an example, with a month’s caravan journey with enough pack beasts you can bring back over 1000 of each of these materials.
6. Mining Colony
You can establish a new colony dedicated solely for mining. For that you will need to enable multiple colonies in the options menu. But keep in mind that abandoning it afterwards will turn it into an obstacle.
7. Trading
Also sometimes there are trade ships that pass by your place, and they often have some plasteel for trade. Trading with a spaceship would be the best choice, but bulk good traders might also have some.
Trading can bring home a few hundreds of the material, but it might be expensive and your economy should be good enough for a successful trading, so probably, this method can become more useful later in the game.
For trading you can sell slaves, clothes, or even make some stuff solely for this purpose, like human leather dusters, various drugs, or even wooden grand sculptures. If you scale it nicely, you will get lots of the material and gold.
8. Rimworld Dev Mode
Ultimately, just try using a dev mode to spawn in some plasteel if you are desperate or think that your game has bugged out the whole thing.

#8 Forgotten Scout
Coming in at #8 on our list of the best Rimworld scenarios is Forgotten Scout. The story is that you are a scout for your colony looking for a new place to settle, you find a spot and return home but find your original colony burned to the ground. You grab what little supplies are left and head out. Here are the parameters for this scenario:

Taking inspiration from the insanely popular Fallout series, The Long Wanderer gives players a new level of difficulty most haven’t encountered. In this scenario, toxic fallout is constantly raining down on the planet. This means anyone or animal not under a roof will be slowly poisoned and eventually will die. Trying to micromanage your colonists and animals in this scenario can prove tough in the beginning, luckily you start with hydroponics already researched. Here are the parameters for the scenario:
- Start with 1 pawn
- Starting pawns have an 85% chance to start with cryptosleep sickness.
- Start with Hydroponics
- Permanent game condition: Toxic Fallout
And here are is your starting equipment:

Is Naked Brutality too hard? Have you played it and want something a little different, but similar? Maybe you really like rat meat. Whichever one it is, this is the scenario for you! Rat Meat Survivor is a very simple, yet very hard scenario. Here are the parameters:
- Start with 1 pawn chosen from 8
- Pawn has a 100% chance to start with malnutrition
- Pawn starts naked
Here is the vast list of gear you will start with:
- Rat meat x500
- Steel knife
Good luck in this scenario! Your rat meat will rot quickly if you don’t turn it into meals, your pawn is starving and will eat the raw meat giving a mood debuff, and all you have is a steel knife. Naked Brutality with a little twist!
#5 Let’s Cook
Another scenario based off of a series this time TV, Let’s Cook brings Breaking Bad to Rimworld. If you are a fan of starting drug empires in Rimworld, this is the scenario for you! We suggest using this scenario to start a drug manufacturing colony. Since you will already know how to make most drugs, hydroponic basins and start with neutromaine it should be easy to get your drug empire up and running. But be careful! Your colony’s wealth will only serve to attract bigger raids! Here are the starting parameters:
- Start with 2 pawns
- 50% chance to start with chemical interest
- 50% chance to start with go-juice addiction
- Start with the following research – go-juice production, drug production, microelectronics basics, psychite refining, and hydroponics
- Drug production increased by 150%

#4 Fallen Marines
At #4 on our list of the best Rimworld scenarios comes Fallen Marines. A bit overpowered of a scenario since you essentially start with three combat-ready pawns that can take on almost anything, Fallen Marines is one that I always find myself coming back to when I want a lighter playthrough. The scenario is that a UNSC battleship blew up over the planet and three ODST marines have crashlanded along with a ton of other goodies. Here are the starting parameters:
- Start with 3 pawns
- They may start with the following traits (% chance unknown) Bloodlust, jogger, iron-willed, hard worker
- Start with the following researched – Turrets, Machining, Hydroponics, Auto doors, Geothermal Power
Here is the starting gear for this scenario that will fall in the drop pods with your marines:

#3 Hangover From Hell
After a night of binge-drinking and partying you somehow managed to set your ship on fire. After making your way to the escape pods, you crashland on a rimworld with an insanely bad hangover and no clue what to do next. Here are the parameters for this humorous scenario:
- Start with 4 pawns between 18 and 32
- 80% chance to start with chemical interest
- 100% chance to start with hangover
- Brewing is already researched
